Harris in LA website – webcams from everywhere

18 Sep

The Harris in Los Angeles website has been updated. In fact it is a different website. The site as many more webcam links and more to come. There are more categories, more pages, more of everything. Of course what we want is more visitors. I think that webcams are fun and interesting. You get to see a location on the internet and then someday go and see it in person.

Over the years webcam technology has improved and there are a lot more streaming webcams on the internet. there also are a lot more webcams that the user can control. User control webcams can be a lot of fun when you get your chance to control the camera. Of course if you are just watching it can be like a roller coaster ride as the image is suddenly changed without warning. There are also some cams with very good image quality and great zooming ability.

There are webcams that just will not make it on to the site. They are the webcams that are not updated on a regular basis. Unless the cam is at the north or south poles it has to update the image regularly. If the webcam is not updated regularly is it really a webcam or just some one posting pictures?

Of course for many the webcam is only something to do on the side and not their core business, however you must remember that people all over the world can see the cam. For many it will me the only time they ever look your way so it is to your advantage to make the best impression you can You put up a good cam and the Harris in LA website will list it. Take a look at the site for yourself at Harrisinla.com

Amazon Cloud Player

30 Mar

I like the new Amazon Cloud Player. I know (or at least hope) it will improve in the future. In less than 24 hours I have used half of my allotted 5gb of space and I know I will need at least 40gb if I want to upload all of my music. I have always wanted to access my stuff without carrying it with me. Oh sure I could connect to my computer at home from a remote location, but to do that I would have to leave the computer at home on and that is a waste of power.

Now, what about the music industry? Will the music industry run to the courts to stop Amazon? I was reading a article on the Tech Crunch site on that very subject. Here is my take, when I use my cloud player I’m not sharing my music. I’m the only person connected to my account. It is just like me connecting to my computer at home from a remote location. I hope Amazon has all the legal stuff covered but we shall see.

More work on the Harris in LA site

17 Jan

I have been learning a lot about web development so far in 2011. Far more than I really want to know. Don’t get me wrong I do find PHP and MYSQl interesting, it is just very time consuming. Some times it is hard for me to get away from the computer without finishing the phase of the project I’m working on. Of course the more I learn the more I want to do. Last night, this morning and today I have been working on pagination. Try not to fall asleep before you finish reading this. I want to make Harris in LA a very large site with links to 1000’s of webcams and I need to know this tech stuff to get it handled.

This weekend I went to a tech meeting of a group called LAMPSIG LAMP stands for Linux Apache Mysql and PHP. The people were very friendly and they spoke English (I think). The meeting was on some software that debugs PHP. I have no idea what they were saying but I go to the meetings just in case I pick up something. After the meetings the group goes down to a Denny’s on Wilshire Blvd to talk even more tech. At Denny’s I was able to pull out my laptop and get some help with a few pressing problems I have been working on with the site. They were very helpful. My problems only took 10 minutes for them to solve.

I’m sure you are wondering how building a website with links to webcams is going to make that second billion I’m looking for. The answer is simple, it won’t. The Harris in LA site is a entry level site for Oahu Internet Promotions. It is a place to make mistakes and learn. I’m learning a lot of tech and SEO. When I start work on the second and third phases of the companies plan I will hire people to do the tech stuff. Some people try to educate themselves to get a good job working for someone else. My goal is to educate myself to create jobs for other people. That being said it is time for me to get back to work (class). The new Harris in LA site will be coming soon.

Working on Harris in Los Angeles

14 Jan

I have been so busy working on the Harris in LA site. it has been up for almost two years now and for the past year I have paid it little attention. The focus of the site is two things I love, Los Angeles and webcams. For the past two weeks (I could say all of 2011) I have been teaching myself Mysql and PHP. I want to make the site much larger and I do not want just static pages I want dynamic pages that way I can show more webcams without having to create all the pages by hand.

I thought I would be finished by the 10th of January and I could have been but I keep coming up with more ideas. With any luck I can have it all done by the 1st of February. It is now 5:40 AM and I’m about to go back to work on the site. I hope it will turn out alright. www.harrisinla.com
